Focus

You tackled your distractions, cleared them to the curb and NOW you are ready. Ready to start again with a renewed sense of focus, putting your attention to what matters. When you focus things become clear. Distractions disappear and our attention becomes centred and concentrated on the task at hand. Once we focus we unleash the creative energy within us, connecting to the task at hand. Focusing is not about keeping up with your to do list. It is about turning up the internal volume and shutting out the external distractions, tuning into your internal voice and energy to turn on your inner creativity. As soon as we are truly in focus we begin to embrace the task at hand. We throw all of ourselves, not just our attention into the task! We gain clarity about what...

Momentum – Keep on Moving!

A common challenge in fresh starts is maintaining momentum. Soon after the excitement of starting fresh comes the lull that if not addressed, could easily turn into stagnation. No one likes that feeling of being stuck. That is where gathering momentum comes in handy.  Just how do you get momentum? Think back to your high school formulas. When it comes to measuring movement you take into consideration both the speed and magnitude. () It’s about how fast you move and the extent or degree of how much effort or energy you put into it! Once you start moving it’s easier to keep moving. When you wake up in the morning it takes time and maybe a couple of cups of java to get you in your groove. But to just get going is not enough. To have true momentum requires more than...

Fresh Start

The concept of a fresh start really has two components to it. The first part is “fresh” implying a new, not stale approach, like getting a fresh start in the morning when travelling on a long journey.  The intent is that you will be rested and able to carry on and navigate the road with alertness and new gusto! The second component to a fresh start is movement. We often embark on a fresh start because we are stuck or at a stand still.  Simply stated, a fresh start refers to starting over to reach a particular destination or to attempt to complete a longstanding niggley project or goal. Wherever you are on your life journey – remember you can always make a fresh start. Each day we get the opportunity to start anew – so carpe diem! But before you get on the...

Gatherings

It is that time of year when plans are made to gather. Family and friends from near and far get together to celebrate, to connect and to create new memories. We eagerly awake these moments. Favourite traditional dishes are prepared, meals are shared and stories are told. We gather to exchange stories, to get caught up with one another. After the meal is done, the board games are won all that is left are new stories for us to reminisce on the next time we gather.  We unite to build and strengthen bonds that sustain us when we are away from each other. Here are some reflections on gatherings: Gathering We gather to come Together here Arriving home To the place where We are from We assemble away From somewhere else Aligned in the light of day Collecting what was...

Traditions

Every month is marked by a longstanding customary tradition that owns and defines the month. Retailers rally round and don’t miss the early opportunity to remind us to pay attention and get ready to conform to the norm of traditions defined by our society. From the beginning of January through to the end of December we are reminded when and what to do, according to traditional flare. Just like each month is marked with a signature tradition each season also has routines of passage. Growing up in an Italian family I am no stranger to traditions. he summer was (and still is) tomato season, followed by the fall wine pressing, spring Easter bread baking and then winter salami making. Each season has its’ own focus for our...

Coming and Going

Coming and Going The process of coming and going has always been a great fascination for me. No matter how I travel, whether it is by car, train, plane, boat or even on foot I notice that there are always other fellow travellers on the journey. I find myself wondering where are they all travelling to and where are they coming from. No matter what time of day, month or season, the ebb of people coming and going never stops. It is constant. “Coming” refers to what is pending, the future, what is next and what is happening soon, whereas “going” refers to the act of leaving, reaching or arriving at a place. Both are a vital part of our existence and our being in this world.  I contemplated further on this subject while on recent train trip. Here is a poem I...
